The Canadian Museum of Nature is currently seeking applications from students who are seeking to commence a master’s program at a Canadian post-secondary institution to participate in its Scientific Training Program. The selected individual will be offered the opportunity to participate in the Program as a Research Assistantship for a two-year term commencing in or around September 2022 during which the Museum will support their undertaking a research project related to biodiversity or geodiversity in one of the disciplines of study at the Canadian Museum of Nature: botany, mineralogy, palaeobiology, or zoology, or in a field relevant to the museum’s archival collections. Proposed research is expected to be collections-based and may involve field work.
The Research Assistantship will undertake their master’s program under the advisement or co-advisement of a Canadian Museum of Nature Research and Collections professional. Applications from environmental historians and related fields are encouraged.
The Museum will provide the Research Assistantship a stipend of $17,500/year and a research budget of up to $5,000 per year to support their research program (e.g., lab costs, field work, conference participation).

Daniel is an Associate Professor in the School of Environment, Geography, and Sustainability at Western Michigan University. He is an editor for The Otter-La loutre and is part of the NiCHE executive. A transnational environmental historian who focuses on Canadian-American border waters and energy issues, particularly in the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence basin, Daniel is the author or co-editor of six books on topics such as the St. Lawrence Seaway, border waters, IJC, and Niagara Falls. His book "Natural Allies: Environment, Energy, and the History of US-Canada Relations" was published in summer 2023. His newest book is "The Lives of Lake Ontario: An Environmental History" (September 2024). He is now working on a book about Lake Michigan and hopes to eventually write a book on the environmental history of the Great Lakes.
