It’s the start of a new era for NiCHE! For the first time, you can become an official member of the Network in Canadian History and Environment.
So, what does that mean?
Since 2004, NiCHE has been a network of scholars of environmental history, environmental humanities, and historical geography from both within and beyond Canada. Our mandate is to coordinate networking activities and disseminate the research of those studying the historical relations between people and the rest of nature with a certain emphasis on Canadian history.. That isn’t going to change. In recent years, we’ve asked for donations to raise funds to help support what we do. And our community has been so generous, because the support was rooted in an acknowledgement of the value of the work NiCHE does. Starting in 2027, rather than simply donating money to NiCHE, we’re inviting everyone who wants to support the organization to become official members.
The support of your membership will allow us to:
- Pay a part-time digital strategist and social media editor to continue to attract interest in NiCHE as a global hub of environmental history and humanities, driving traffic to our website publications, which have consistently received more than 220,000 visits over the past several years.
- Offer honoraria to writers in precarious positions who publish on our website, ensuring that our community continues to see the work of scholars from a diverse range of backgrounds and career stages.
- Provide modest travel stipends for graduate students to attend important NiCHE-community events, such as the Canadian History and Environment Summer School (CHESS), which help shape the next generation of the field.
- Cover our operating expenses, including webserver costs; banking, bookkeeping, and accounting fees; and copyediting for our peer-reviewed publication Papers in Canadian History and Environment (PiCHE).
In return, your membership provides:
- An electronic copy of the monthly NiCHE newsletter, which features highlights of the published content from our website, announcements and calls for papers, and other important messages, opportunities, and information related to the field.
- Eligibility to participate in the NiCHE-organized events and programming, including the Canadian History and Environmental Summer School (CHESS) and other future events.
- Admission to our Annual General Meeting where members will receive information about the future of the organization and the right to vote on important decisions.
- An entry for a draw to win one of a limited number of free books authored (and signed!) by members of the NiCHE executive committee!

NiCHE is a volunteer non-profit organization driven by the opportunity to connect brilliant, insightful, and generous people who want to learn from one another; promote their work to a broad audience; and nurture their network in meaningful ways that will contribute to the field. We truly love the work we do, and we’d like everyone who reads, writes, and thinks about Canada and the environment to be a part of this community.
Over the next few weeks, we are asking you to consider becoming a member of NiCHE!
