The European Society for Environmental History (ESEH) announces four non-residential fellowships funded by Gale. These fellowships provide funding to early-career scholars who are working, or interesting in working at the intersection of Environmental History and Digital Humanities. The scheme will support research or/and teaching projects that rely on Gale Primary Sources and apply Digital Humanities methodologies in the context of Environmental History.

The Fellowship period is for six months, starting on July 15, 2024. Gale will provide funding of US$ 2,500 for each fellow for a total of US$ 10,000 (ESEH Fellowship will be transferred in Euro currency).

During the Fellowship period the fellows will have free access to various Gale archives, including Gale Digital Scholar Lab and the Environmental History Archive. Access to other archives which support individual fellows is certainly possible where necessary.

Fellows will be provided with the software to support their research. All Fellows will get full training on the use of these databases and software packages and support for their research for the 6-month period from Gale’s team of Digital Humanities and archive experts.

The application deadline is June 15, 2024.

Who is eligible:

• Applicants must be current ESEH members.
• The fellowship is open to Ph.D. students working on their thesis, early-career scholars who have completed their PhDs within the past seven years (May 2017 to present), and unemployed independent scholars.

How to apply:

Please submit:

• a CV (maximus 3 pages);
• a project proposal (maximum 1000 words). This should include:
  • a research question;
  • a discussion of the proposed methods and the sources the applicant plans to use;
  • indication of the area of intervention (teaching or researching or a mixture of both).

Information for succesful applicants:

• Recipients of the ESEH-Gale Non-Residential Fellowships will be invited to submit a panel proposal at the 2025 ESEH Biennial Conference in Sweden. If selected by the Programme Committee, fellows will receive an additional US$ 500 (the amount will be transferred in Euro) to attend the conference and present their project proposals, to assist with travel and accommodation expenses.
• In conjunction with the Society, Gale would deliver an introductory session(s), arranged during the application period, to introduce interest scholars to the Fellowships, Gale, the archives and the Lab and to answer any questions they might have about the Fellowships or how to apply.
• At the end of the six-month fellowship period, all Fellows will provide a short report (2-3 pages) on their research, how they used Gale Digital Scholar Lab to explore and analyse texts and lessons learned. These and interviews with the Fellows form the basis of case studies which will amplify them and their work to a global audience.
