It’s a new year and with that comes a new rep! As the outgoing NiCHE New Scholars Representative, I am delighted to introduce you to our incoming New Scholars Representative, Justin Fisher. Justin is a PhD student at the University of Saskatchewan where his academic interests focus on energy history. Justin was an invaluable participant in the New Scholars network last year and will make an excellent representative this year!

For those who don’t know, New Scholars is a network of early career scholars (graduate students, recent grads, postdoctoral fellows, and alt-academic ECRs) who share an interest in environmental history and humanities as it connects to Canada.

It has been a pleasure to serve as the New Scholars representative for the 2018-2019 year. During my tenure as rep, I had the opportunity to digitally meet with early career scholars from across North America for provocative discussions about resource extraction and futures, animal histories, energy history, and environmental history and activism. We had a committed group of participants who helped me think about my own work in new ways and whose insights offered inspiration for new projects. Our discussions were intellectually challenging, and the blog posts that followed these discussions helped demonstrate the various ways in which these meetings encouraged us to reflect on our fields.

Acting as New Scholars rep also gave me the chance to start a new series on the blog, Unearthed, which highlights early career scholars. It’s been a pleasure connecting with each of those scholars featured on Unearthed and I look forward to this series continuing!

Thank you to everyone who participated in our digital meetings and who wrote reflections about them, and to those who agreed to be highlighted in the Unearthed series. It’s been a wonderful experience meeting you, getting to know you, and learning from your insights on Canada’s role in environmental history. I leave you in capable hands with Justin for what is certain to be a fantastic New Scholars year!

The New Scholars committee was an excellent resource for me as a graduate student providing opportunities to connect with peers in different institutions, challenge my thinking, and disseminate my work to a public-facing audience.
