The Northeast and Atlantic Region Environmental History Forum (NEAR-EH) brings together colleagues exploring the environmental history of the northeastern United States and Atlantic Canada. We share a premise that the environmental history of this region has a different story to tell than the more dominant narrative generated from the West.

For eight years, the group has sponsored a workshop for which participants submit pre-circulated papers that are then discussed in-depth, going well beyond the typical level of engagement authors get at a standard academic conference. Many participants have since published their papers as articles, chapters of books, essays, or have used the feedback to advance their scholarly agenda and win competitive research grants. This year we particularly invite participants to share in a forum their experience in taking NEAR-EH papers from workshop to press.

The Sunday evening keynote, focusing on Lucy Maud Montgomery and the environment, is an optional event and will also be open to participants at the LMMI conference (24-28 June). The NEAR-EH workshop sessions, proper, will begin on Monday. For information on the LMMI conference, see www.lmmontgomery.ca.

The 2020 NEAR-EH will be hosted by the CRC in Geospatial Humanities & the Department of History and Classics at the University of Prince Edward Island in historic Charlottetown. There is no registration fee. Organizers work to provide participants with some food and recreation options, but travel and lodging costs must be covered by the participant. Once participation is confirmed, the organizers will circulate information about affordable accommodations at the University of PEI.

We limit paper submissions in the final workshop to twelve active participants so as to ensure a meaningful experience that includes close examination and discussion of the individuals’ papers.

Acceptance into the workshop will be announced on April 13. Participants should book accommodation in Charlottetown soon after acceptance. Papers are due for circulation to other participants on 18 May.
