Grad Scholar in Residence

Environmental Media Lab, University of Calgary

Residency Timeframe: October 3 to 31, 2022

Application Deadline: 12 p.m. (Mountain), Friday, July 29, 2022

The EML supports junior scholars. That’s why we’ve launched a grad-scholar-in-residence program. During the scholar’s residence, they’ll benefit from an intensive mentorship with the EML team, leading to their publishing work in Heliotrope, hosting an EML Reading Group discussion (#EMLRG on Twitter), and giving a talk to grad students and faculty at both host and home institutions.

APPLICATIONS ARE NOW OPEN FOR OCTOBER 2022 RESIDENCY

Timeframe

The next residency will take place October 3 to 31, 2022.

What to expect

In this residency, we aim to provide you with mentorship on your writing from our Heliotrope team, networking with scholarly communities, and the opportunity for a dedicated audience to engage with your work. We will help you create work for Heliotrope, lead an #EMLRG, and give a talk to students and faculty at both host and home institutions.

The stipend for this residency is $250 CAD. We realize this amount is honorary. We are working, slowly but surely, to create an academy that better recognizes the traditionally-unpaid labour that constitutes so much of academic life.

Eligibility

  • We welcome applications from students working in universities anywhere in the world.
  • We are keen to receive applications from students impacted by systemic racism, sexism, and other modes of discrimination.

What we’re seeking in our October 2022 scholar

In 2022, the EML is particularly interested in scholars with a practice in degrowth computing. Instead of giving a typical talk in this residency, this scholar will instead lead a workshop in the area of degrowth, low-tech, or DIY media.

How to apply

Please submit your application to eml@ucalgary.ca. It should include the following:

  • A letter: In the letter, please provide a brief explanation (one paragraph or so) of why you’re interested in this residency. In another paragraph, outline the project you’d like to nurture in this time, and connect this project to the proposed topic for the workshop you’ll lead in degrowth, low-tech, or DIY media. Please be sure the letter includes your full name, program, and contact information.
  • A sample of your work: This could be a paper, something you’ve published, a recorded presentation, a podcast, a research-creation project—anything you’ve created that represents your thinking and values.

Associate Prof. Communication, Media and Film at University of Calgary
I am the Director of the Environmental Media Lab (EML: www.environmentalmedialab.com) and an Associate Professor in Communication, Media and Film at the University of Calgary. My work generally focuses on data centers and cloud imaginaries. These days, I'm exploring DNA data storage, and (what I've been calling) "genomic media" -- deployments of DNA for computation and archiving. Since 2015, I've also been teaching and thinking about digital death, the digital afterlife, and new cloud technologies dedicated to death in various ways.
