Keweenaw Time Traveler Re-Launch for Researchers
June 1, 2022 – 11am EST
Virtual Event
Please join us for the re-launch of the Keweenaw Time Traveler, a public-participatory deep mapping project.
This public-participatory deep mapping project allows public users to have access to hundreds of historical maps, data and the ability to contribute place-based knowledge, images and stories to the Copper Country Historical Spatial Data Infrastructure.
This deep map covers America’s earliest copper mining boom region in the Keweenaw Peninsula in Upper Michigan from 1880–1950. The Keweenaw Time Traveler supports researchers and the public to learn about the region’s immigration and migration, industrial, environmental, labor, economic and social histories and geographies.
The Keweenaw Time Traveler provides public access to over 630,000 records and almost 20 million variables from census, city directory, school records, workplace records, and built environment data sets. All data is record-linked temporally and mapped to residences, workplaces, and schools. This affords an opportunity for the public to explore maps and data through time as well as search for people, addresses, places, and stories.
Come and learn about…
- How we mapped almost 20 million variables about the past population, places, and environments in the region?
- How did we link historical datasets across time and space?
- How can you use this as a research tool?
- How does this project engage a broad public in spatial humanities research and education?
The Keweenaw Time Traveler project is a result of a multi-year interdisciplinary collaboration of scholars at Michigan Technological University along with our local archival and heritage partners and the broader public.
Co-Principal Investigators: Dr. Don Lafreniere, Dr. Sarah F. Scarlett, Dr. Dan Trepal, Dr. Robert Pastel, and Dr. Karla Saari Kitalong, and the rest of the Keweenaw Time Traveler Team.
