Canadians at ASEH & N|H|S Get Together

As we usually do, NiCHE has arranged an informal get together for Canadians attending ASEH. UBC Press’s Nature | History | Society series will be sponsoring the event (and there just might be a draw for books from the series, wink wink). Of course, this year the conference is in Canada, so does that mean everyone is a Canadian … well, before we get too meta about the whole thing, you probably just want the details.

We will meet on Thursday, March 26, from 5:00-7:00 pm at the Mill Street Brewery (555 Wellington Street). It is a short walk from the conference hotel, though it can be kind of tricky to find since it is hard to see the brewery from Wellington Street (I’d advise taking the walking route highlighted on the map above). The brewery is housed in a refurbished mill astride Ottawa River canals and channels, so in addition to good proximity and good refreshments, it is an appropriate meeting place for a bunch of environmental historians.

Based on past experience, we may still well be there after 7:00 pm (but we want to officially be done before the Women’s Caucus starts, plus Mill Street can only guarantee two hours for a reservation). They have great beer and food, though you don’t need to eat (but should probably purchase something). All Canadians, friends of Canadians, those who wish they were Canadian (and who doesn’t, especially these days) – basically, anyone who doesn’t hate Canadians is welcome to join. We currently have reserved a few tables for 30 people, but it would be great if you could let Dan Macfarlane (danielwdmacfarlane@gmail.com) know if you’re planning to come so we can change reservation numbers if need be.

And if you can’t make it? Blame Canada!

Daniel is a Professor in the School of Environment, Geography, and Sustainability at Western Michigan University. He is an editor for The Otter-La loutre and is part of the NiCHE executive. A transnational environmental historian who focuses on Canadian-American border waters and energy issues, particularly in the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence basin, Daniel is the author or co-editor of six books on topics such as the St. Lawrence Seaway, border waters, IJC, and Niagara Falls. His book "Natural Allies: Environment, Energy, and the History of US-Canada Relations" was published in summer 2023. His newest book is "The Lives of Lake Ontario: An Environmental History" (September 2024). He is now working on a book about Lake Michigan, co-editing a book on the St. Clair River/Delta/Lake, and is planning to eventually write a book on the environmental history of the Great Lakes.
