The Network in Canadian History and Environment has three Editorial Team positions to fill for The Otter in 2025.
The Editorial Team is a ten-person group that supports the work of the Executive by editing, soliciting, and writing content for our blog; editing and maintaining our resource pages; and helping to develop new NiCHE initiatives. We welcome our editors to bring new ideas to the table. Editorial Team positions are one-year terms (January 1, 2025 – December 31, 2025), with an annual option for renewal.
Editorial Team members can be based in any geographic location (although preference will be given to applications from Canadians and people living in Canada), and we welcome a variety of expertises, including geographic and disciplinary. Editorial Team members are welcome to edit and write pieces in both English and French. The Editorial Team is a voluntary position.
Prospective Editorial Team members are encouraged to read our Guideline for Contributors before applying in order to become familiar with the types of submissions we publish and our editorial process.
Editorial Team Members are normally expected and invited to engage in many, but not all, of the following types of work:
- Solicit and edit individual blog posts and blog series on topics related to environmental history, environmental humanities, historical geography, and related disciplines.
- Solicit and edit event announcements, call for papers, and other news and announcements.
- Communicate with other publications and authors to cross-post content on our website.
- Work with Editor-in-Chiefs on author submissions that need editorial assistance.
- Work with Executive and Editorial Team members on brainstorming new content, addressing potential opportunities, and dealing with any issues that arise.
- Work on developing and updating our resource pages, digital methods resources, and other permanent pages on the website.
- Support the development of Project Pages.
- Develop audio, visual, and other multi-media initiatives.
- Develop social media content.
- Serve on the Executive Fundraising and Merchandise Committee.
The NiCHE Editorial Group works with the capacities of its editors, understanding that time devoted to NiCHE volunteer work may ebb and flow throughout the year. However, NiCHE Editorial Team members are expected to meet the following expectations:
- Be active communicators and contribute to conversations on the Editorial Team Basecamp (an internal and secure communications platform) and check Basecamp at least once a week.
- Attend 2-3 virtual editorial meetings annually.
- Have a background in WordPress website editing or a willingness to learn.
- Make sure that website maintains a baseline publication schedule of every Tuesday and Thursday (i.e. editors may be asked by the Editors-in-chief to take on responsibility for filling in specific Tuesdays or Thursdays that are not covered in the publishing schedule)
- Be lead editor on a post(s) when requested to do so by the Editors-in-chief.
- Conceive and execute at least one substantial undertaking consistent with NiCHE’s organizational goals (ie. blog series, resource page, multimedia project, social media campaign, fundraising initiative, etc.)
- Respond to communications promptly, and complete delegated work from Editors-in-Chief within given timeframes.
- Active editorial team members are given an annual option (in October) to renew their term for the following calendar year.
