Call for Abstracts: Fourth Annual Terror Camp Conference on Interdisciplinary Polar Research (Free, Online)
The organizers of the 2024 Terror Camp digital conference invite submissions for presentations on topics related to Arctic and Antarctic history, literature, media, science, and environmental humanities. Now in its fourth year, Terror Camp is an interdisciplinary conference that brings together emerging scholarship on the polar regions and polar exploration, broadly construed, with the vibrant community and lively engagement of a fan conference. This year’s Terror Camp will take place on Zoom on Saturday and Sunday, December 7th and 8th, 2024.
Terror Camp was first created by fans of The Terror (AMC, 2018), to showcase the research, work, and ideas generated by a multidisciplinary, multi-talented fandom related to the histories of the polar region and polar exploration. It is a welcoming event, open to both affiliated and independent scholars and those just dipping their toes into academic research. No formal qualifications are required to present. You can read more about Terror Camp in this recent Atlas Obscura article or on the conference website.
The organizers invite submissions for individual 15-minute papers, preconceived roundtables, posters, and skill-based workshops. Possible topics for submissions may include:
- Original historical and archival research on polar topics
- The Terror, Franklin Expedition, and polar exploration-related history
- Show meta, media theory, and criticism
- Fan works (art, fiction, cosplay, etc.)
- General film, TV, and performance analysis
- Gender and queerness
- Race, Indigenous studies, and colonialism
- Polar geography, biology, and conservation
- Fandom culture and communities
- Archaeology and forensics
- Character studies and biography
- Museums, preservation, and digital humanities
More details, including an FAQ, can be found in the full CFA on the conference website. The conference will be free and open to anyone who would like to attend. Keynote speakers will be announced later this year.
Submissions are now open using this link and will close on September 1, 2024, with the exception of submissions for posters, which will close on August 1st. (This is because the organizers will begin displaying posters before the start of the conference.) The organizers will accept abstracts of 300 words or less, or audio or video pitches of three minutes or less.
