I am an historian who studies expeditions, natural history, extreme environments, and material culture in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. I look at the gear explorers carried with them on their travels - to the polar regions, to high-altitude mountains, to tropical and arid places - and how this gear shaped their experiences and the cultural worlds of which they were a part.
