Mercedes Peters is a Mi'kmaw PhD student in History at the University of British Columbia. She was born in Wolastoqiyik territory, and is a band member of Glooscap First Nation. Her research focuses predominantly on Indigenous sovereignty assertion in the 1960s, 70s, and 80s. In particular, her work focuses on the ways Mi'kmaw and Wolastoqiyik women created paths to sovereignty beyond the purview of the Canadian and U.S. settler states.
