Marika Avenel Brown & Melissa Montanari
Marika Avenel Brown (she/they) and Melissa Montanari (she/her) are PhD Candidates and Teaching Fellows in the Department of English & Cultural Studies at McMaster University. Marika’s research considers how nature might function as a speculative project, both in speculative fiction and elsewhere, to trouble the division between natural and unnatural and to posit better future entanglements between human, nonhuman, and more-than-human life. Melissa’s research thinks at the intersection of critical food studies, literary studies and environmental humanities to consider how certain foods, ingredients and flavours cite and gather transformative culinary genealogies and knowledges both in so-called Canada and beyond. Throughout the course of their doctoral studies, they have shared many joyful vegan meals in Ohròn:wakon (Hamilton, Ontario) and elsewhere.
