Seeking Applications for "Environmental History" Editor

The American Society for Environmental History and the Forest History Society seek applicants for the position of Editor-elect for the journal Environmental History beginning no later than January 2011. Following a transition period of 6 to 12 months the Editor-elect will assume full duties of the Editor. The term is typically for five years. This is a volunteer position.

Scope of the Journal: Environmental History (EH) is the world's leading scholarly journal in environmental history. EH brings together scholars,
scientists, and practitioners from a wide array of disciplines to explore changing relationships between humans and the environment over time. In addition to refereed articles, EH offers a growing range of online resources. EH is co-published by the American Society for Environmental History and the Forest History Society.

Qualifications:recognized expertise in the field of environmental history or related field(s), managerial, organizational, editorial, and electronic skills to oversee the editorial cycle, meet deadlines, and work with publishing professionals, a compelling vision for the future of the journal and the field, the ability to attract established and new scholars to publish in the journal, tact in communicating with authors and staff, membership in either ASEH or FHS (or both), institutional support for the duration of the five-year appointment, including release time as necessary.

Major responsibilities:
In general, the editor is responsible for the intellectual content, quality, and timeliness of the journal issues as well as the overall success of the
journal. Specific duties may include but not be limited to:providing a clear vision for the direction of the journal, soliciting high-quality manuscripts from potential authors, selecting a sufficient pool of competent peer-reviewers and managing the peer review process of 80 to 100 manuscripts per year through an online system, deciding which manuscripts to publish, assisting authors in seeing their manuscripts to publication, working with a Graphics Editor, Book Review Editor, Web Editor, and Press to ensure timely publication, Appointing an active Editorial Board to provide advice and counsel, Representing the journal in outside venues and conferences

Search procedure: Applicants will be reviewed by the Search Committee immediately after the submission deadline, and several candidates will be interviewed at the ASEH meeting in Portland Oregon, March 10-14, 2010.

The application packet should be no more than 5 pages (not including the CV and Statement of Institutional Support) and include:

Cover Letter: Please include name, affiliation, and other relevant information, and summarize evidence of your ability and experience.

Vision Statement: No more than 2 pages, including perspective on challenges and opportunities; future plans for the journal; expected tasks and objective milestones; funding requirements; etc.

Statement of Institutional Support: Candidates should address the feasibility of serving as editor in light of the institutional resources likely to be available. The journal publisher does not pay for office space, clerical assistance, or release time, but can provide basic financial support for office resources and travel, up to $5000 per year. Letters of institutional support from your Chair and/or Dean will be helpful.

Curriculum Vitae: The C.V. should include publications and any editorial experience.
