I work on Russian, Ukrainian and transnational (including North American) environmental history. My main interest in recent years has been the steppe region, the subject of my recent book 'The Plough that Broke the Steppes' (OUP, 2013), and comparisons/connections with the Great Plains and Prairies.
I am lead investigator on a Leverhulme Trust International Network on Russia's environmental history,
and have also worked on British environmental history,
I currently work at the University of York, UK, but began my career at the University of Texas at Austin,
